Libraries Rock: Summer Reading Program

What is Summer Reading?

  • A free, 7-week program that encourages children to read and keep their brain active through the summer
  • Free children's events at the library

How do I join?

  • Visit the Johnston Public Library anytime between June 2nd and July 21st to pick up a reading log and music kit

How do I earn prizes?

  • Check-off a music note on your log each time you read for 30 minutes or engage in one of the activities listed on the log
  • When 15 music notes are checked-off, bring your log to the library to collect a free ice cream coupon and a bag full of fun prizes
  • Repeat the steps above to check-off the next 15 music notes then bring your log to the library to receive a free book and an entry into the grand prize drawing

All reading logs must be submitted by Saturday, July 21.

Why is reading over the summer important?

According the US Department of Education, "numerous studies indicate that students who don’t read or read infrequently during their summer vacation see their reading abilities stagnate or decline." This "summer slide" becomes more pronounced as students get older. The Library's Summer Reading Program helps kids avoid the summer slide by encouraging reading and other mentally engaging activities with a fun, easy-to-follow participation log and prizes along the way.
