Access information about summer reading, including events and programs at the library, the prizes we are offering, and printable reading logs.

What is Summer Reading?

  • A free 7-week program at your library that encourages kids of all ages to read and keep their brain active throughout the summer
  • Read for 20 minutes a day or pick from a variety of activities to earn prizes
  • There are free programs and events at the library that children can attend

How do I join?

  • Visit the Johnston Public Library anytime between June 3rd and July 22nd
  • Pick up your reading log and STEM Kit

How do I earn prizes?

Bring in your reading log to show us what you have accomplished! When a child completes 10 building blocks they will receive a goodie bag full of fun prizes. Once a child completes 20 building blocks they get a free book and their name in our grand prize drawing!

All reading logs must be submitted by Saturday, July 22.

Why is Summer Reading important?

Children who don't read over the summer experience summer learning loss.  And the effect is cumulative. Kids who lose reading skills over the summer will be two years behind their classmates by the end of 6th grade. The Summer Reading Program encourages to read and participate in activities that are of interest to them, which helps instill a love of reading.
