  • Awareness Training How To Prepare, Attack And Survive A Physical Attack

    West Meeting Room (1/2 of Large) Tue., Oct. 16th 6:00pm - 8:00pm

    In lieu of charging for the class, we ask that you bring a food item which will then be donated to the Johnston Partnership. Ages 14+ (if younger than 16, you must be accompanied by a parent or guardian). Lt. Tompkins of the Johnston Police Department will train attendees on the proper ways to prepare, attack and survive, if ever caught in a dangerous situation. In this class, attendees will learn how to create the correct mindset, safety options to know before something happens and how to create muscle memory to react, when stress is at its highest. Lt. Tompkins will train attendees in stressful situations, so they can learn to think clearly and escape. This class will help you overcome the fear of freezing and empower you with active counter measures, so you can get yourself out of a dangerous situation. This class is not force-on-force and will not offer any contact or take-down moves. You will be asked to work with a partner in a controlled setting to simulate the techniques taught during the class.

  • Senior College: Collision Course Iowa - The 2018 Election

    The November election will be the collision of two competing forces. Republicans have the majority clout in Des Moines and D.C. and hope voters will reward them for cutting taxes and regulations. Democrats believe that voters will think Republicans have gone too far and will give Democrats increased power to stop President Trump.     Pull up a chair, grab a cup of coffee and a piece of pie, and join Kimberly Stuart, local author and Johnston High School graduate as she chats about authoring clean romance novels, her writing process, her experience in the publishing industry, and of course her books, including her newest novel, Heart Land. Kim Stuart's books will be available for purchase from Beaverdale Books at this event. Kimberly Stuart holds degrees from St. Olaf College and the University of Iowa and learned lots of interesting things at these fine institutions, none of which prepared her for the lethal cocktail of parenthood and writing. She is the author of eight novels, including the Heidi Elliott series, Sugar, and Heart Land, released this July. Stuart is a frequent public speaker and is passionate about helping others live great stories.

In November, we are excited to partner with the Indian community in Johnston to celebrate Diwali or Deepavali as it's called in southern India, a Hindu festival of lights that signifies the victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance. This Our Stories event will feature a dance performance by Eshanjali Dance Academy, Mehendi or Henna with Smita Ashok, Diwali crafts, as well as Indian people from the Des Moines Metro area sharing their life experiences. Did we mention there will be food? Come hungry so you can sample the flavors of India while you get to know your neighbors. This is an all ages event and registration is appreciated to help us plan for food quantities.

    Quilling is an art form that involves the use of strips of paper that are rolled, shaped, and glued together to create decorative designs. Quilling starts with rolling a strip of paper into a coil and then pinching the coil into shapes that can be glued together. Curious?
