  • Raising White Kids: Rev. Dr. Jennifer Harvey

East Meeting Room (1/2 of Large), West Meeting Room (1/2 of Large) Sat., Aug. 24th 10:30am - 12:00pm

There's no question--talking about race is complicated. Choosing whether or not to talk to your kids about race is an option many parents, specifically those of color, don't have. For many white parents, figuring out the best way to talk about racism with their children can feel fraught and daunting. Should we teach children to be "colorblind"? Should we teach them to notice race? What roles do we want them to play in addressing racism when they encounter it? Rev. Dr. Jennifer Harvey, a writer, speaker and professor at Drake University whose work focuses on racial injustice and white anti-racism will help us dive into this conversation. Dr. Harvey's most recent book is called Raising White Kids: Bringing Up Children in a Racially Unjust America (Abingdon Press, January 2018). Dr. Harvey has contributed to the New York Times, CNN, and has been a guest on both Iowa and National Public Radio (including NPR's "It's Been a Minute with Sam Sanders"). Registration is appreciated. Register at johnstonlibrary.com.
