    Join the Johnston Fire Department as they share fire safety tips with kids and their caregivers. A fire engine will be on display outside of the library to view after the program. National Fire Prevention Week is October 9th-15th. This program is geared towards kids ages 2-5 and their caregivers, but all ages welcome! A Terrific Tuesday Program.

  • Animal Rescue Friends Book Club

    JPL's Animal Rescue Friends Book Club is for 3rd-5th graders who love all critters! Each participant will receive a copy of the graphic novel "Animal Rescue Friends". Participants will be required to read an assigned story from this graphic novel each month and meet to discuss (approximately 25-30 pages). Along with our discussion, we will meet with an animal friend from the Animal Rescue League of Iowa's TheraPets program and do corresponding crafts/activities. A snack and juice will be provided. For children ages 8 and under, a parent or caregiver is required to remain inside of the library during this program. *Registration is required *Grades 3-5

  • Sherlock Holmes For The Spooky Season

    Sherlock Holmes has captivated the world with his mysteries and adventures for over 100 years. Along with creating one of the most well-known literary characters of all time, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is also known for creating stories of suspense, adventure, and mystery. Throughout the 58 short stories and 4 novels that highlight the careers of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson, our heroes face mythical beasts and chase mastermind criminals through the streets of London. There are adaptations and extensions of these stories across virtually all forms of media which contribute to their lasting cultural impact. Why do Holmes and the stories endure and continue to thrive? Join Professor Emeritus Rodney Henshaw and Dr. Michael Couvillon from Drake University as they help us explore this enduring character and dive into the spooky side of Sherlock Holmes for the Halloween season. "Come Watson, come--the game is afoot!" Registration for this free event is appreciated. Rod Henshaw, Professor of Librarianship, served as Dean of Drake's Cowles Library from 1996 to 2018. He retired from Drake in August 2020. He also served in leadership positions at Penn State and Emory University. Rod has been an active Sherlockian, and a member of science fiction fan culture. Dean Emeritus Henshaw has donated to Drake his Sherlock Holmes, Ray Bradbury and science fiction collection. Dr. Michael Couvillon is a professor of education at Drake University. His areas of expertise are emotional and behavioral disorders, functional behavioral assessments and behavior intervention plans, and juvenile justice. Michael has a BA from the University of Nebraska Kearney, M.Ed from the University of North Texas, and PhD from the University of North Texas. Michael and Rod co-teach a class at Drake called "Sherlock Holmes: A Study of Character, Adventure and Culture."

    Flirting with the idea of a book club, but not interested in peopling or meeting? We get you. The JPL Lonely Readers Club is all of the book club with none of the meetings. Print copies of the Lonely Readers Club book of the month will be available at JPL beginning the 8th of the month, while supplies last.     Flirting with the idea of a book club, but not interested in peopling or meeting? We get you. The JPL Lonely Readers Club is all of the book club with none of the meetings. The book for the month will be announced via the Facebook group @ facebook.com/groups/JPLLonelyReadersClub. Print copies of the Lonely Readers Club book of the month will be available at JPL beginning the 8th of the month, while supplies last. If you're feeling social, (as in, social media social), join the JPL Lonely Readers Club Facebook group and chat with fellow readers about characters, plot, how that one character really bothered you, or whatever else you need to get off your chest. It's the literary lonely hearts club for that little bit of recluse in all of us! Discussion begins online on the last Monday of each month.

Along with our discussion, we will meet with an animal friend from the Animal Rescue League of Iowa's TheraPets program and do corresponding crafts/activities. A snack and juice will be provided.     Join Dreama Deskins on the first Sunday of every month between 1:30pm and 3:00 pm to explore card-making. Dreama and her team will have monthly crafting kits pre-packed with instructions for easy grab-and-go pickups, while supplies last. If you prefer, grab a chair and work on the monthly kit or your own card project and take advantage of our expert help, tools, and crafty company. We'll provide an assortment of card-making equipment and supplies to make your own version of the month's theme. Leave the kids at home for this one--adults, this crafting time is just for you!
