  • Make It: Finger Knitting Fabric Statement Necklace

    East Meeting Room (1/2 of Large), West Meeting Room (1/2 of Large) Sat., Feb. 24th 10:30am - 12:00pm

    Join knitting guru Erica Carnes to make a t-shirt yarn statement necklace using finger knitting. Erica will start from the bare bones basics and teach participants how to create a basic chain--no knitting needles required--just your fingers. After that, let your creativity loose to modify your fabric chain into a chunky cool necklace that's so totally you! All materials will be provided by the library. Space is limited for this free class for teens and adults--please RSVP to reserve your spot.

  • Teen Scratch Coding Class: Game Design

    East Meeting Room (1/2 of Large), West Meeting Room (1/2 of Large) Mon., Feb. 26th 4:00pm - 5:00pm

    In this game design coding class, students learn basic computer science principles and coding skills while programming computers using the block-based language Scratch. This class consists of eight, 60-minute sessions where students are presented computer science principles and create eight different game design projects. Students will be expected to attend a majority of the eight week session. Classes will meet Jan. 22 & 29, Feb. 5, 12, & 26, March 5, 19, & 26. Grades 6 and up. This class is taught by staff from YouthCode DSM.

Cotlar will talk about his book, The Biggest Rolodex in Sports, where he details his more than 40 years in sports interviewing some of the most famous athletes in the country including Hank Aaron, Joe Montana, Wayne Gretzky, Mary Lou Retton, Carl Lewis and many more. Cotlar will also preview the 2018 NCAA tournament with his picks for winners and upsets to watch for. Books will be available for purchase at this event.

    In this game design coding class, students learn basic computer science principles and coding skills while programming computers using the block-based language Scratch. This class consists of eight, 60-minute sessions where students are presented computer science principles and create eight different game design projects. Students will be expected to attend a majority of the eight week session. Classes will meet Jan. 22 & 29, Feb. 5, 12, & 26, March 5, 19, & 26. Grades 6 and up. This class is taught by staff from YouthCode DSM.

  • Free Shred Day At Johnston Public Library

    Johnston Public Library Sat., Apr. 28th 9:00am - 12:00pm

    Get rid of your old confidential documents in a safe and secure way at Johnston Public Library's free Shred Day. THE SHREDDER company will be in the JPL parking lot from 9:00am to 12:00pm for on-site document destruction with 3 of their mobile document-shredding vehicles as well as their secure big box truck for document shredding at THE SHREDDER site. THE SHREDDER is AAA certified by the National Association for Information Destruction. Please limit material to be shredded to 3 disposable boxes or containers per household. To expedite shredding, traffic will route from Merle Hay around the library onto Morningside Drive and enter the west parking lot by the Simpson Barn. Please stay in your vehicle and a volunteer will collect your boxes . No registration is necessary. This event is sponsored by AARP in conjunction with Money Smart Week.
