Tumblereadables - a source for "read-along" titles with text and accompanying audio, especially for new readers, middle schoolers and high schoolers.
Novelist K-8 - a cool website that will help you identify books to read, including help with read-alikes, plots, and characters. If you're an advanced reader, check out Novelist Plus as well!

Special Programs
KidSight - Saturday, September 18 from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Vision screening by the Johnston Lions Club in conjunction with "Iowa KidSight" and the Department of Ophthalmology through the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. The exam is free to any child between the ages of 6 months and 4 years that has not yet received an eye exam from another clinic or doctor. Visiion screening provides instant photographis of the child's eyes to assist in diagnosing vision problems and eye disorders. Results will be sent to the University of Iowa and will be mailed back to the child's home. This process can take up to 3 weeks.
Meet Rebecca Janni- Tuesday, September 27 at 1:30 p.m.
Stampede to the library to meet Johnston author, Rebecca Janni. She will be here to talk to young readers and writers about her experiences with getting a book published and will share her book, Every Cowgirl Needs a Horse. We'll have fun activities along with the program on this "no school" day. Books will be available for purchase following the program, and Mrs. Janni will sign copies. Register for this program beginning September 13. Younger siblings and adult caregivers are welcome.
Family Movie @ the Library - Sunday, September 26 at 2:00 p.m.
Join us for a free showing of Brother Bear 2. No registration is required.

Babies & Books (6-24 months with an accompanying adult)
Thursdays at 11:00 a.m. - Registration begins September 9.
Books, rhymes, music, and more for babies 6-24 months, with a caregiver. Fall Session 1 runs from September 16 - October 21.
Wee Read (18 months to 3 years with an accompanying adult)
Wednesdays at 10:15, 10:45 or 11:15 a.m. - Registration begins September 8.
Books, songs, fingerplays, action verses, puppets, flannelboard stories, and more for children 18 months to 3 years, accompanied by an adult. Fall Session 1 runs from September 22-October 27.
Storytime (Ages 3-6 without an adult)
Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. or 1:00 p.m. - Registration begins September 7.
In addition to books, songs, action verses, puppets or flannelboard stories, this program includes an occasional craft or treat for children ages 3-6. Fall Session 1 runs from September 14-October 19.
Sundown Storytime
1st & 3rd Thursdays of each month at 6:45 p.m.
Drop-in stories and activities for the whole family using the same weekly theme as the Storytime program. September dates are the 2nd and 16th of the month.
School-Age Specials
Meet Rebecca Janni - September 27, 1:30 p.m.
What better way to spend a "no school day" than at the Library! School-age kids are invited to meet local author, Rebecca Janni, who will talk to young readers and writers about getting a book published. Other activities will include some lassoing and eating "johnnycakes!" Registration begins September 13. Younger siblings and adult caregivers are welcome to attend as well.
Tuesday Book Club (Tweens and Young Teens)
Last Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m.
Enjoy tasty snacks and lively discussion at this book club for tweens and young teens. Call the library for more information about September's book selection and to sign up for the September 28 program.
Teens and Teen Advisory Board
Teen Advisory Board will begin meeting again in the fall. Join us on September 13 at 6:45 p.m. for a great time! Keep up on details on our MySpace page as well.
Make & Take Craft
First Saturday of the month, 10:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
September 4 - Join us in the Children's Area to complete a craft.
