Mission StatementThe mission of the Johnston Public Library is to grow and develop with the community to meet the people's cultural, educational, and information needs in a welcoming setting that supports lifelong learning. Strategic Plan 2008-2011Follow the link to view the Library's strategic plan for 2008-2011. HistoryThe Johnston Public Library was originally organized in 1988 as a branch of the Urbandale Public Library and was located in the Johnston City Hall. On July 1, 1992, the Johnston Public Library became independent to better meet the needs of our growing community. In 1994 a campaign began to raise support and funds to build a new library building for our expanding collection and programming. In 1999 the citizens of Johnston approved a bond issue to construct a 27,000 square foot state-of-the art facility. The groundbreaking followed in April 2000, and on October 6, 2001, the Johnston Public Library held its Grand Opening for the new building at our current location at 6700 Merle Hay Road. The Johnston Public Library has grown with the community. In the first year of the library's existence, there were 728 cardholders and a circulation of just over 34,000 items. At the end of FY 2008/2009 the library had nearly 15,500 cardholders, and these cardholders checked out more than 267,000 items. The collection has grown from its origins in City Hall to approximately 74,000 items.
